The Chipmunks Dance trend is a three-person TikTok routine set to a high-pitched "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)". Three people stand in a row, and the front spot keeps changing hands: one steps up for a short solo, slides back, and the next one takes over. It's named after Alvin, Simon and Theodore because there are always exactly three of you, and because of that squeaky chipmunk sound.

Here's a version from the October 2026 wave:

Where the trend came from

Late April 2024: the trio that made it. The routine is credited to the ICM Triplets (@icm_triplets). Their post "We didn't have a green sweater" carries the note "dc: us" (dance credit: us) and the tags #thechipmunks, #thechipettes and #rightround. TikTok lists its audio as "You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)" by The Chipmunks, and it passed 1.7 million likes.

April 2025: the follow-up. A year later the trio posted it again, captioned "Here I come", tagged #alvin, #simon and #theodore. That one passed 1.3 million likes, and other dancers started crediting them in their own versions.

October 2026: the comeback. In mid-October the dance came back, this time far beyond dance accounts. Siblings, roommates and friend groups filmed it, often in red, blue and green to match the three chipmunks. @athenaa_c's version with her two siblings, posted on October 17, is the one at the top of this page.

Late October 2026: Halloween. Because it comes with a built-in costume (three colors, three chipmunks), trios started posting it as their group costume idea in the run-up to Halloween.

Why it spread

  • It needs three people, no more, no less. Every group chat has a trio, and the casting writes itself. More on that in the Chipmunks Dance meme.
  • Everyone gets a turn. Unlike dances with one lead, each person has a solo at the front.
  • The sound is instantly recognizable. A chipmunk-voiced hook most people already know. See the Chipmunks Dance song.
  • It's easy enough for one take. The moves are simple; the fun is in the handoffs.
  • It travels. TikTok's search pages also show Spanish-language "reto" versions and dance-cover crews doing it.

How the routine goes

The order is always the same: a still line-up, four handoffs at the front, and a finish where all three rush the camera. The step-by-step guide breaks it down with timestamps.

How to join the trend

  • Same room? Film it. Phone at chest height, about 2.5 meters back, and practise the order of turns before the moves.
  • Different cities, or no time to rehearse? Chipmunks Dance AI makes your trio's version from three photos, one per person, with the trend sound already on it.
  • Dressing up? Our costume guide has the red, blue and green casting, plus the Chipettes.
